Shaquille O'Neal: "I'm like President Bush. You may not like me, you may not respect me, but you voted me in."
It is that quote and those types of things that get sports fans fired up, wondering where and why things like that are said. O'Neal is referring to his all-star appearance. Starting at Center for the East while not playing most of the first half of the season and even when he did, he was not all-star. The fans have the chance to vote for players online with a group of players listed when the season starts or just after. So they can't see what players will be worthy of the honour.
Shaquille, although lovable to some with his off the cuff comments and constant smile upon his monster frame, he has become a bad basketball player. He continues to not be able to do the simple things of an average NBA big man. As in make a freethrow consistently, make a layup without pushing everyone out of the way and ripping the rim down. If another team has a solid big guy that can be strong and play good defense, Shaq is lucky to get 20+ pts a night.
Dwight Howard almost a clone of O'Neal when and who he was in the early 90s in a Magic uniform, has shown people glimpses of greatness with his towering dunks and blocks on D.
I am just hoping to see him mature instead of get lazy get bigger and bowl people over, rather than playing basketball, developing a jumpshot and playing good all-around baskteball for years to come.
A player now touted as the next big thing in basketball is Center for Ohio State in Greg Oden.
Who has come back from a hand injury and rather than not play he plays with one good hand and Oden shoots an astounding 65% FT (left-handed). I still think he shuffles his feet too much down low with the ball but never gets called for it, so maybe I am wrong but look for it next time you watch.
